Cavalry
For the last two years, the Cavalry has been replaced by the Yellmen. During this time, school spirit has dropped dramatically. Our freshman year at Moeller, the Cavalry was electric—they drew huge crowds to sports games and boosted the school’s morale. But since they were replaced by the Yellmen, school spirit has been at an all-time low. Hardly anyone wanted to attend games because of them.
This year, the Cavalry roster consists of Kayde Ridley, Jake Gaerke, Cass Grierson, Asher Compton, Eli Fudge, Gunnar Voellmecke, Sean Herzig, and Danny Kelly. This is a very strong group of leaders to run the student section. Attendance at games has reached an all-time high. At the last football game, there were 180 people in attendance—an incredible feat considering how few showed up over the past two years.
The biggest change for the Cavalry has been the people chosen to lead it. In the past two years, the student section leaders simply didn’t fit the role. As a result, attendance was low because no one liked the chants the Yellmen came up with. In contrast, during our freshman year, the Cavalry was electric. Everyone liked its members, and they did a great job getting the underclassmen involved.
The future of Moeller’s student section is very bright. We’ve come up with new strategies to encourage more students to attend games, and we plan to implement them for years to come. We also plan to hold a draft at the end of this year to select next year’s Cavalry members.
